Speech & Language Services

An assessment by a speech language pathologist may be appropriate if you have concerns about your child’s ability to speak clearly, learn new vocabulary, speak in sentences, understand instructions, read and/or write. A comprehensive evaluation can help identify any underlying speech, language and/or literacy difficulties.

Our services

Within our speech and language services, we provide two packages to support your child.

  1. Early Years Speech and Language Service: for 2-year-olds to Prep-age.
  2. School-Aged Assessment Service: for children in Year 1 to Year 12.

Find out more about our two services by clicking on the tabs to the left.

Our Speech Pathologists can provide assessment in the following areas:

Speech Assessment

If you have noticed that your child is having difficulty being understood or seems to struggle with producing certain sounds, it may be appropriate to consider a speech assessment. This type of evaluation involves a variety of tasks designed to assess your child’s speech abilities. During the assessment, the speech language pathologist will focus on the following areas:

  • Sound production: identifying which sounds your child can produce correctly and which ones they might have difficulty with.
  • Oral motor skills: evaluating how your child uses their lips, jaw, and tongue to produce specific sounds.
  •

Language Assessment

A comprehensive language assessment is crucial for identifying and addressing potential language difficulties in children. Our team of experienced speech language pathologists offer thorough evaluations to determine whether your child is experiencing language difficulties, a language disorder or Developmental Language Disorder (DLD).

During the assessment, the speech language pathologist will assess the following core language skills:

  • Receptive Language The ability to understand spoken language, including following directions, understanding vocabulary, and interpreting sentences. This includes:
    1. Understanding words and phrases
    2. Comprehending questions or instructions
    3. Following directions of increasing complexity

  • Expressive language The ability to use language to communicate thoughts, ideas, and feelings effectively. This includes:
    1. Vocabulary usage (e.g., naming objects, describing actions)
    2. Sentence formation and grammar (e.g., using appropriate tenses, word order)
    3. Ability to convey information clearly and effectively
  •
  • Narrative Skills The ability to tell stories or describe events in a logical, organised way. This includes:
    1. Recalling and retelling stories
    2. Sequencing events (e.g., knowing the order of events)
    3. Creating a coherent narrative with appropriate details

Literacy assessment

Only available for children over the age of 7 years

A literacy assessment is designed to evaluate your child’s reading and writing skills, identifying any challenges they may be facing in these areas. During the assessment, a speech language pathologist will assess key skills such as letter recognition, phonemic awareness, decoding, reading comprehension and written expression. Early identification of literacy difficulties is crucial for providing the right support to help you child build strong literacy skills and thrive academically.

Early Years Speech and Language Service

For 2-year-olds to Prep

At Speld Qld, our Early Years Speech and Language Services provide short-term, targeted support for young children at the beginning of their therapy journey. This service gives families timely access to evidence-based speech therapy to help build strong foundations for communication.

We support children to express themselves, understand language in daily routines, and develop key communication skills. Families are empowered to support communication at home, and we help identify any need for ongoing or broader allied health support.

This service acts as an entry point into speech pathology and early intervention. If further support is needed, we assist with next steps, including referrals to private providers, NDIS-funded services, or education teams.

Our goal is to provide practical, early support that sets families on a confident path toward long-term communication success.

Early Years Speech and Language Services Package

  • Our Early Years Package is designed to provide clear, practical support for families looking to better understand and strengthen their child’s speech and language development. It combines expert assessment, parent coaching, direct therapy, and written feedback to guide your child’s communication journey.
  • Our Early Years Package includes 9 hours of support: 7 hours of face-to-face sessions with your child for personalised therapy, assessment, and parent coaching, and 2 hours behind the scenes for your speech pathologist to complete detailed analysis and reports.

The package includes the following key components, thoughtfully designed to support your child’s progress and your family’s journey:

Initial Consultation Session

We begin with a face-to-face session involving you, your child, and a speech pathologist. This session allows us to gather key background information, understand your child’s strengths and challenges, and set clear goals for support. Play-based activities will be used to observe your child’s communication in a natural and engaging way.

Six Dynamic and Individualised Sessions

These face-to-face sessions are tailored to your child’s developmental needs and may include:

  • Comprehensive assessment A mix of formal and informal assessments across the face-to-face sessions to evaluate your child’s current speech and language skills, identify areas of strength, and highlight areas where support is needed.
  • Parent coaching We’ll share practical strategies you can use in everyday routines and interactions to support your child’s communication at home.
  • Direct therapy Targeted, one-on-one therapy activities with your child, aligned with the goals set in the consultation.
  • Support with referrals If further support is needed from other professionals or services, we’ll guide you through next steps and make recommendations to help coordinate holistic care.

Two Non-Face-to-Face Planning and Documentation Sessions

As part of the nine-session package, two sessions are allocated as non-face-to-face time. During these sessions, your child’s speech pathologist will focus on analysing assessment results, planning therapy, and preparing documentation. This includes writing summary reports, developing tailored goals, and creating any necessary resources or recommendations to support your child’s progress.

Comprehensive Summary Report

At the end of the package, you’ll receive a detailed written report that includes:

  • Outcomes from the sessions and any assessments
  • Summary of your child’s progress and goals achieved
  • Practical recommendations for next steps
  • Information about additional community supports, if needed
