Assessment Service

At Speld Qld, psychologists conduct assessments to help understand how people learn. Each assessment includes a report with clear recommendations to support learning. Our assessments focus on learning needs and strengths. We do not complete assessments for applications to other services. However, our reports can be shared with any professionals or services you are working with.

To enquire about an assessment or availability, please complete the Child or Adult Assessment Enquiry Form.

During an initial phone call, our booking team can talk with you about your concerns and help identify the most suitable assessment.

Speld Qld conducts the following assessments (click on the plus icons to find out more):

Psychoeducational Assessment

A Psychoeducational Assessment (or learning assessment) is conducted by a registered Psychologist. It assesses for cognitive and academic strengths and weaknesses. This assessment can provide a diagnosis of a Specific Learning Disorder (in reading, written expression, and/or maths) if appropriate (e.g., dyslexia, dyscalculia).

What’s Included

  • Interview to discuss background history, concerns and questions, and previous assessments.
  • IQ/Cognitive Test to investigate cognitive strengths and weaknesses (or intellectual ability).
  • Academic Achievement Testing to measure reading, spelling, written expression, and maths skills.
  • Report with the findings, diagnosis (if appropriate), and recommendations.
  • Practical recommendations including relevant supports, resources, strategies, and accommodations.
  • Feedback session via phone or video call to discuss results (20 minutes).

Additional Information

  • Clients generally receive reports within 6 weeks of the assessment.
  • In some cases, additional questionnaires (such as those related to attention, behaviour, or daily living skills) may be helpful. If so, your psychologist will discuss this with you beforehand, including any additional costs, and will seek your consent before proceeding.
  • Before a potential diagnosis of a Specific Learning Disorder, difficulties must have persisted for at least 6 months despite receiving interventions or extra help targeting the area/s of difficulty (e.g., reading, spelling, written expression and/or mathematics).
  • There are many reasons why someone may have difficulty with learning and not everyone assessed will receive a diagnosis.
  • Psychologists also consider other factors such as vision, hearing, attention, opportunity to learn, speech and language, and Intellectual Disability when investigating learning difficulties and if a diagnosis is appropriate.
  • Recommendations will still be provided if a diagnosis is not made.

ADHD Assessment

Psychologists at Speld Qld can assess for Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children and adults and provide a diagnosis, if appropriate.

What’s Included

  • Interview to discuss background history, concerns and questions, and previous assessments.
  • Structured clinical interview for ADHD.
  • IQ/Cognitive Test and observations.
  • Attention and behaviour questionnaires.
  • Report with the findings, diagnosis (if appropriate), and recommendations.

Additional Information

  • Clients generally receive reports within 6 weeks of the assessment.
  • Not everyone assessed will meet the criteria for an ADHD diagnosis.
  • If ADHD is not identified, we provide detailed feedback on strengths and challenges, along with recommendations for alternative supports or further investigation if needed.
  • Note – Psychologists cannot prescribe medication. We recommend consulting with a medical practitioner such as a paediatrician or psychiatrist to discuss medication.
  • Psychologists may recommend engaging with a medical practitioner for a review as part of exploring ADHD symptoms.

School Readiness/Early Years Screening Assessment

Psychologists at Speld Qld can complete assessments for children aged between 4 years old and the end of Prep to explore early learning and developmental needs.

What’s Included

  • Interview to discuss background history, concerns and questions, and previous assessments.
  • IQ/Cognitive Test to investigate cognitive strengths and weaknesses.
  • Academic Achievement Testing to measure early literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Developmental and behavioural questionnaires.
  • Report with recommendations to support learning and development.

Speech Pathology Assessment

For children in Prep to Year 12

At Speld Qld, our School-Aged Assessment Service is designed to provide a comprehensive assessment that focuses on your child’s speech, language and/or literacy skills. Based on this assessment, we will provide a detailed comprehensive report with targeted recommendations. This report is designed to guide you and your child’s school in implementing the necessary supports to ensure your child’s success in both academic and social settings.

With early identification and tailored strategies, we can help create a pathway for your child to thrive in the classroom and beyond.

Our School-Aged Assessment Service Package includes the following:

  1. Case History Call: A call with the parent/s to gather important background information to understand your child’s specific needs and to guide their assessment plan. After the case history call, the speech language pathologist will create an assessment plan with the appropriate range of practice areas requiring assessment (e.g., speech, language and/or literacy).
  2. Comprehensive Assessment: A detailed evaluation of your child’s speech, language and/or literacy skills to identify areas of strength and potential challenges.
  3. Comprehensive Report: Following your child’s assessment, we provide a comprehensive report that offers a detailed overview of the findings.
  4. Consultation Session: A phone call designed to provide you with a clear, detailed understanding of your child’s assessment results. During this call, we’ll walk you through the comprehensive report step-by-step, ensuring you fully understand the findings and recommendations. Together, we’ll discuss the best plan moving forward for your child. This session may also be conducted with your child’s education team.
