Specialist Teachers

Speld Specialist Teachers are private contractors and may offer their services in a number of different ways.  Some come to you, some require you to come to them, while others offer online tuition and support.  Please read the teacher profiles and bios carefully to avoid disappointment when requesting a teacher.

If you can’t find a teacher in your area, consider accessing a specialist teacher via live video web conferencing. Many regional, rural and metro families benefit from the convenience of this service and find it just as effective as face to face services.

“If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn..”

I offer personalised, fun tutoring/intervention in literacy and maths. Children learn best when they feel safe, are engaged and having fun. Every child is unique in the way that they learn and how they perceive the world, so I use a holistic, multi sensory, play based approach. My program is structured and uses explicit teaching methods. I can test to see where your child has gaps and then work together with you, to help catch up these concepts and build a strong foundation.

I am a registered and experienced teacher with qualifications in Primary Teaching, Linguistics,  Reading Recovery, Learning Support and I have  accreditation to teach the  Sounds-Write  phonics program, The  Cracking The ABC Code  Multisensory reading  and comprehension programs and the Learnersaurus Literacy programs. I have over 30 years of teaching experience in the classroom including learning support. I am currently working part time in a school as a Special Needs Teacher.  I have always been passionate about supporting students who struggle with literacy or numeracy in my classroom . This  desire to support these students  to gain confidence and to succeed has led me out of the classroom and into my own tutoring business. My quest to support students who struggle and to teach according to how they learn,  has encouraged me to seek training in specialised literacy programs to supplement my experience and to  ensure the success of my students.  I offer face to face tutoring in the family home or  venue of their choice and online tutoring via Zoom or Scribblar.

I have more than twenty years’ experience in schools, working as either Classroom Teacher or Learning Support Teacher. I bring this knowledge about schools and curriculum to my role as a Speld Specialist Teacher as well as additional training in several multi-sensory, evidenced based programs.

Together we will journey with your child with a clear direction forward. Over time, with direct instruction and lots of practise, your child will develop carefully sequenced and cumulative skills and knowledge, which will empower him/her as a learner and as a person. As we take each new step forward, your child, with blossoming self-belief will be able to respond, “I know I can”.

I am a passionate teacher of 26 years in the classroom. I am a qualified teacher with a blue card as well as current teacher registration. I studied about Dyslexia in 2016 then in 2018 after my daughter was diagnosed at age 7. I then sought assistance from Speld Qld in how best to support her. After that experience, and with my teaching background and interest around Dyslexia I did further training in multi sensory teaching with the Learnersaurus Program and worked at the Speld Qld office for 12 months delivering the program onsite. I have also completed further training in other programs as well as currently the two year teacher training course in the “LETRS” Professional development course of which I will finalise this year in 2021. I now tutor online and have limited availability with some face to face Tutoring. I really enjoy teaching and tutoring and assisting people to reach their full potential with their reading, spelling and writing, as well as in other academic areas. I tailor the literacy delivery to the individuals requirements.

I provide a unique 8 week reading program that couples the structure and sequence of the Sounds Write Program with social and emotional training through, Equine assisted learning through the Horse Powered Reading Program. I am a senior experienced literacy specialist teacher and trained EAL (Equine Assisted Learning) facilitator.

When reading doesn't come easily to a young person, social and emotional barriers begin to impact their willingness and engagement with learning. Combining academic rigor with social-emotional learning reconnects young people with learning. Through productive struggle and safe equine encounters we can provide optimal levels of arousal to engage cognitive processes to create new neural connections and increase concept engagement and retention.

I have been teaching for 30 years the last 7 as a Sounds-Write specialist literacy teacher.  Specifically, I have designed my program for dyslexic learners to target their strengths and define the individuals learning difference and fill those gaps so that the students can move forward with their literacy.  My rapport and ease with students of all ages, I feel, is one of my key strengths.  Learning can only be made when anxiety and stress are alleviated.  Therefore, I focus on what the students knowledge is and show them strategies to manage in a classroom where the teacher may not fully understand their learning difference.  By identifying a students cognitive strengths I have been able to teach students ways of learning that makes reading, writing and spelling less arduous and gives the individual the knowledge of how to learn.
